In classic films of the western genre, the action takes place in the American Wild West in the 19th century. The conflict usually unfolds between a gang of criminals, representatives of the authorities and bounty hunters. As in a conventional action movie, the dispute is resolved through violence, which is inevitably accompanied by gunfire. In westerns there is an atmosphere of aspiration for independence, characteristic of the inhabitants of the western part of the United States.

A kind of alternative to the European cinema of the 20s was American film art, which was characterized by a realistic reflection of reality in the films of E. von Stroheim (1885–1957) - "Greed"; K. When asked to mention Ukrainian film works, 40% of respondents could not give an answer. Among the 60% of respondents who were able to remember Ukrainian cinema, the following films were most often mentioned: "Squat32" (2019, romantic drama), "Mykyta Kozhumyak" (2016, cartoon), "Devoted" (2020, historical drama), "Mad Wedding" (2018, comedy), "I, You, He, She" (2018, comedy).
